Last weekend Drea and I drove up to Atlantian Kingdom Arts and Science Festival. We had a fabulous time and I got to spend some much needed time just hanging out and seeing friends that I hardly ever get to see. I also got to see many well deserve people get recognized for their research and arts. Plus we got to enjoy a exciting adventure through the wilds of Virginia on the way to dinner with Mathilde. Thankfully the trip home was blessedly uneventful we arrived home right around 11pm.

I am really trying to get back in the habit of taking pictures at events and I took lots of pictures at KASF. They are up in my SmugMug gallery if you would like to take a look.

While most of my friends are at Pennsic I’ve decided to take take this week to plow through some projects that have been sitting on my To Do list for a little too long. The first thing I did was to actually write the list down:

Finish commission up to hem

Clean sewing room

Clean bedroom

Finish Mending

Make Shirt

Make Brais

Pattern Pourpoint

Cut out pink doublet

Cut out Wool jerkin

Embroider on Jacket?

Cut out Coty’s suit

Cut out Pluderhosen

I finished the first 3 today and I’ve been making good headway on the fourth this afternoon.

While cleaning up my sewing room (it was so bad I couldn’t find anything and it stressed me out just to be in there!) I found my new Venetians waiting to be put away and I realized I had never taken a picture of them for you. So with out further ado here are pictures of the Venetians I finished in April/May. Please excuse the mess in the guest bedroom and fact that they were taken with my cell phone. The camera is still MIA. I’ll be taking better pictures for the website once I’ve found the camera.

When I was Baroness I took up spear so that I could fight with my troops on both the heavy and rapier fields at war. I had a lot of fun with it but at the time I didn’t have any real intention of going farther with heavy fighting. Several months ago that changed and I had a renewed desire to pursue heavy fighting in more depth. This meant I would need more armour and, since I had been borrowing a helm from my husband previously, the first thing I would need is a helm of my own.

We were over at Clare and Eldrid’s last weekend and one of the projects worked on was my helm. Gaston got some great in progress pictures of Master Eldrid working on my helm and they are now up in my gallery. Check ‘em out!

Since I posted a tutorial on incorporating pockets into venetians and trunkhose yesterday I thought I would post a bit today about the pants the tutorial is based on.

I had posted recently that the first project of my great wardrobe overhaul was going to be new rapier armor. Since I wanted to base it off of depictions of suits worn by soldiers in De Ghyen’s The Exercise of Armes I spent several hours pouring over my copy of the treatise. While there were several examples of men wearing trunkhose, most appeared to be wearing venetians so I decided to start with a pair of those first. Most of the venetians depicted appeared to have legs that were gathered or pleated into a leg band but a few appeared to be made with a fitted knee similar to the ones depicted in Janet Arnold’s Patterns of Fashion. Since I’ve always like those pants but never made a pair for myself I thought this would be a great opportunity to finally have my own pair.

I decided to make my venetians out of a burgundy wool flannel which I purchased from B. Black and Sons several years ago. The are lined with linen and the pocket bags are also made of linen. Since many of the venetians depicted in The Exercise of Armes and the ones I was basing mine on from Patterns of Fashion also had contrasting trim on the sides I decided to trim mine with pink linen bias tape that I made myself of a remnant I had left over from a previous project. Pictures of the pants currently in progress can be found in my gallery.

It has been kind of a crazy week and a half since I last posted. Sorry for the delay guys.

I had a fantastic time at Golden Rose last weekend. Sadly I forgot my camera but several friends were kind enough to let me grab some of their pictures. These are up in my gallery for anyone who would like to see them. Sadly there aren’t any pictures of me fighting but that’s OK. I’ve decided to make a concerted effort to bring the flip camcorder with me to events and practices so that I can get video of my own fighting. Well, so I can kindly ask someone to record me while I’m fighting but you all get the idea. I think this will also provide me with good opportunity to critique and improve my own fighting.

I did get my green linen kirtle hemmed over the weekend and it’s now ready for eyelets and the last of the hand finishing. If I’m industrious I should be able to finish all that by the end of this weekend. I’d like to have the gown ready for Midnight on the Oasis in a couple of weeks (or at the very least War of the Wings). Since it’s short sleeved I’m probably also going to make myself some pin on wool sleeves in case it turns cool for War of the Wings. I’d also like to finish a new belt to wear with it but we will see if I make it that far.

This past weekend we went down to Beaufort, NC to enjoy some excellent Coastal NC wreck diving.

We arrived in Beaufort Friday afternoon and after checking in with the dive shop we enjoyed a lovely early dinner with friends at No Name Pizza. It’s a great little hole in the wall pizza place that also makes really excellent pasta, burgers, and sandwiches. If you are ever in Beaufort I highly recommend it. We were staying in the dive shops dive lodge so after dinner and a quick trip to the grocery store for breakfast stuff and snacks we headed back to the lodge to wait for the rest of our dive group. They arrived through out the evening and after talking about the plans for the next day we all headed to bed. Morning would be coming very quickly.

We were all up by 5:30am and on the boat with our gear set up and ready by 6:30. By 6:45 we were under way and on our way out to see the U-352. It was about a 2 hour trip off shore and simply an amazing dive. From the U-352 we headed to the Spar where we dove with some of the most beautiful Sand Tiger sharks I have ever seen. Sand Tigers aren’t an aggressive shark and these guys were really very curious about who we were and what we were up to. They spent quite a bit of time checking us out. It was incredible. After the Spar we headed back to the dock and after pulling our stuff off the boat and cleaning our gear we got showers and found a bit of lunch. Our dive leaders had organized and excellent cookout for us. Some rain chased us inside but the food was excellent.

Sunday we were up again by 5:30 and on the boat before 7. We got underway by 7 and headed out to the Aeolus. We enjoyed a very lovely dive on the Aeolus before heading to the Indra. It was an excellent day on the water. The seas were nearly flat calm and the sun and water were just gorgeous. We got back into the dock around 1ish. After unloading our gear and checking out with the dive shop we got showers and packed up the car to head home. We left Beaufort around 3pm and after some lunch and an uneventful drive arrived home around 6ish. We had a lovely dinner to celebrate our weekend and then happily crashed into bed.

Thankfully we had also taken Monday off of work and we spent the day at home relaxing, recuperating, and doing some laundry. It was an amazing weekend.

We don’t have an underwater camera but some friends did get some pictures of us. There are a couple pictures of me up on my gallery and I will be adding more as I get them.

I realized Sunday night while I was starting work on the second sleeve that I hadn’t updated my gallery for this project in several months. Unfortunately when I pulled out my camera last night to snap some quick pictures I noticed that my batteries for the camera were dead. So I pulled out the Flip, shot some quick video of the completed sleeve and gore, and then pulled out some stills from the video so I’d have something to show you guys this morning. The stills I was able to pull out don’t give you a good overall view but I did charge the camera batteries last night so I can snap a few more pictures this evening.

So there are new pictures up in my jacket gallery if you all want to check them out and more are on the way soon.
